The International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) seeks: Scientific officer – Agricultural Economics (West and Central Africa)

ICRISAT is seeking applications for the position of Scientific Officer (Agricultural Economics) to serve for the CGIAR Research Program on Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security (CCAFS) based at ICRISAT Bamako, Mali. The Scientific Officer will report to the CCAFS West Africa Regional Program Leader.

The Job:

Under the direct supervision of Dr. Mathieu Ouédraogo, the Scientific Officer (Agricultural Economics) will be instrumental in conducting research under the CCAFS climate-smart value chains and climate-smart villages’ projects in West Africa. The incumbent will also assist other scientists and students in the ongoing activities within the CCAFS West Africa research programme. In particular, the Scientific Officer will:

  • Assist in developing research questions and survey instruments for strategic and applied socio-economic research on climate-smart value chains and climate-smart village’s developments in CCAFS priority countries (Burkina Faso, Ghana, Mali, Niger and Senegal) in West Africa.
  • Handle and analyze data to produce high quality scientific papers
  • Build the capacity of field investigators in collecting information related to climate-smart value chains and smallholder farmers’ production.
  • Synthesize and review technical reports for the CCAFS WA program.
  • Contribute to the fulfillment, in a timely and accurate fashion, of the various mandatory reporting requirements for the ongoing activities in the CCAFS WA regional program.

The Person:

  • Masters or Engineer (Ingénieur) degree in Agricultural Economics, Economics or in Statistics.
  • Excellent knowledge of data management methods and ability to use econometrics Software such as Stata, R and spreadsheets (e.g. Excel, MS Access).
  • Good knowledge in digital data collection like ODK, CSPro, etc.
  • Experience in fieldwork and good understanding of value chains and climate-smart agriculture in West Africa and gender research.
  • Good proficiency in French is required (and a knowledge in English is desirable).
  • 2-3 years’ relevant experiences in agricultural economics research and crop value chains.
  • Experience and ability to work in multi-disciplinary teams with diverse cultural backgrounds
  • Conceptual and report writing skills are required.
  • Good record of scientific publications is an asset.

The Reward:

This is a locally recruited staff position with an attractive and competitive salary and benefits package payable in local currency (XOF). The package includes base salary, pension, insurance and children education allowances. The position is for two years, and extendable depending on performance of the incumbent and funding availability.
