The U.S. Embassy in Bamako, Mali is seeking an individual to provide English language instruction.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Conducts classes in English using the techniques, methods and training materials provided by various sources including the Department of State’s English Language Program. Initially interviews, tests aptitude and level, and assigns students to classes. Develops curriculum with an emphasis on speaking and reading and periodically evaluates the effectiveness of teaching materials and methodology. Assigns lessons, and corrects faulty pronunciation, improper tone pattern, and faulty structure by using intensive drills of various kinds. Periodically assesses students’ progress and assists them in surmounting language learning difficulties. Transfers students to other classes, if their progress clearly exceeds or is much slower than other class members. Classes taught may range from the beginning level to more advanced levels.
SELECTION CRITERIA:

  • Possession of a university degree in English is required.
    – From one to three years of experience in positions requiring the application of language instruction skills and techniques and effective communication with students to gain and hold their interest. Six months or more experience providing language instruction to non-native speakers.
    – Level IV (read and write) English is required. English comprehension will be tested.
    – Excellent knowledge of grammar, idiom, syntax, and pronunciation of English required.
    – Ability to effectively communicate with students, evaluate their progress, and to retain their interest and motivation and to assist them in rapidly developing their language ability.
    – Computer literacy in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Internet Explorer required.
