ICRISAT is seeking applications from potential candidates in West and Central Africa to contribute to Africa Research In Sustainable Intensification for the Next Generation (Africa RISING). Africa RISING is a program that creates opportunities for smallholder farm households to move out of hunger and poverty through sustainably intensified farming systems. The successful candidate will be based in Bamako Mali and report to Africa RISING project coordinator.
The Job: Scientific Officer (Nationally Recruited Staff) Cadre of ICRISAT
Work under the project coordinator and assist the implementation of project activities in Bougouni and Koutiala.
Conduct agronomic practices and applying crop modeling frameworks (APSIM, DSSAT, etc…) to the research for development that leads to more sustainable smallholder farming systems in Mali.
Find farm level agronomic interventions that improve the performance of existing cropping systems and test/simulate and introduce new agronomic systems, crop types and varieties.
Collaborate with multi-disciplinary and interdisciplinary teams from ICRISAT, and other CGIAR Centers and with National Agricultural Research Institutes, regional organizations and higher education institutions.
Work closely with other project staff in the field to collect and collate biophysical, socio-economic, gender, crop-livestock and crop productivity data, analyze and write reports.
Undertake research in a number of possible areas that include but not limited to: agronomy, land management and soil health, crop-livestock, water management.
Liaise and coordinate with site coordinators and partner institutions on implementation and monitoring of field based activities.
Assist the project coordinator to prepare and finalize regular reports both technical and financial.
Organize workshop/meetings etc. as and when needed
The Person:
MSc degree in agronomy, natural resource management, soil science or related discipline with 4 to 6 years’ experience in activities related to field based agronomy, natural resources management, climate risk modeling and related research areas.
Strong statistical and modelling skills, skills in GIS and Remote sensing, knowledge of computer applications and software for data management and analysis.
A high level of competency in the design and implementation of field-based experiments
Ability to conduct integrated agricultural research for development
Innovative, energetic individual with demonstrated contributions to the field of agriculture and committed to seeing measurable impacts at farm level.
Excellent in both English and French (spoken and written)
Experience in working with a wide range of stakeholders and interest to work in interdisciplinary team
Willingness to travel.
The Reward:
The contract will be for one year in the category of NRS (Nationally Recruited Staff), with a competitive salary (monthly basic salary minimum of 304,566 FCFA) and other annual allowances paid monthly.
