The Famine Early Warning Systems Network (FEWS NET) Early Warning Team (EWT) seeks a West Africa Regional Remote Monitoring Specialist (RRMS) to be based in either Niamey, Niger, Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, or Bamako, Mali. FEWS NET is an integrated set of activities funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and is intended to provide timely, accurate, evidence-based, and transparent food security early warning information and analysis.

The FEWS NET EWT maintains offices in a number of countries in Africa, Central America, Central Asia, and the Caribbean. The West Africa regional office reports on six presence countries in the region as well as additional countries under a Remote Monitoring (RM) approach. The West Africa RRMS will work closely with the West Africa Regional Representative (RR), among other FEWS NET EWT staff, to provide decision makers with information on current and likely future acute food insecurity conditions outside of FEWS NET EWT presence countries.

Activities include but are not limited to:

  • Efficient, focused food security monitoring, data collection, assessment, and early warning analysis;
  • Effective communication of early warning analysis to partners and decision-makers though high-quality reports and, as relevant, participation in briefings and formal and informal meetings;
  • Close collaboration with and project representation to key partners, such as host government ministries, United Nations (UN) agencies, and international and local non-governmental organizations (NGOs), among others in select RM contexts, as appropriate in RM contexts;
  • Strong partnership and network development and expansion to enhance acute food insecurity early warning efforts.

Minimum qualifications for this position include:

  • Proficiency in spoken and written French and English is required; other local language skills relevant to the region are desirable.
  • Bachelor’s degree in a discipline relevant to the work of FEWS NET, such as economics, agricultural economics, agronomy, nutrition, climatology, anthropology, or social geography is required; advanced university degree (Master’s degree or higher) is desirable.
  • At least two years of relevant experience (with PhD), four years of relevant experience (with Master’s degree), or six years of relevant experience (with Bachelor’s degree) is required. Relevant experience includes working on food security information systems, food security analysis, early warning, or other related fields; experience working with UN agencies and/or NGOs is desirable.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively conduct rapid assessments, focus group discussions, key informant interviews, other rapid rural appraisal techniques, and other qualitative and quantitative research and data collection methods required.
