Role Purpose

The Metal Accounting Geologist is responsible for providing technical guidance and instruction relating to all geometallurgical and metal accounting issues. This includes the strategies for stockpiling, ore characterisation, blending, SGS management and capabilities and, reconciliation. The Superintendent will also be responsible for the technical aspects of geometallurgical sampling campaigns, data management, analysis and estimation of geometallurgical parameters in 3 dimensions.

Key Accountabilities 

  • Lead, manage and develop the geometallurgical processes across multiple disciplines.
  • Develop strategies for Ore body characterisation, Stockpile management, Blending and reconciliation to improve gold production.
  • Development of geometallurgical sampling programs and protocols.
  • Provide governance for sampling and laboratory activities.
  • Undertake daily, weekly, monthly and annual reconciliations and recommend remedial actions.
  • Provide governance for sampling and laboratory activities.
  • Develop Resource and Reserve modifying factors with geologists and mine planners.
  • Identify key plant impacts (e.g. deleterious elements) and develop remedial actions.
  • Develop and populate a 3D geometallurgical block model with appropriate geometallurgical charteristiscs for use in planning.
  • Develop sampling programs, manage data, estimate geometallurgical parameters and update the geometallurgical models and databases.
  • Appropriately analyse, evaluate and report all significant reconciliation issues.
  • Provide input relating to metal accounting and geometallurgy into short, medium- and long-term planning.
  • Ensure all works carried out comply with safety, quality and design requirements.
  • Liaise regularly with mine planning, geology and mine production personnel.
  • Carry out audits, reviews and quality assurance programs.
  • Appropriately plan operational and capital budget requirements for works and equipment related to metal accounting and geometallurgy.
  • Manage contractors and consultants.
  • Ensure that contractors and consultants are used only when necessary, that their work is aligned with business needs, and is properly managed in terms of cost, quality, schedule and safety.
  • Check compliance to procedures and safe work practices in the field through the Planned Task Observation (PTO), and Task Observation Process for Supervisor (TOPS) systems.

Key Role Qualifications Required:

Desirable, in addition to the key skills and experience required:

  • BSc in Geology, Metallurgy or Mine Engineering (minimum).
  • MSc in Geometallurgy (preferred).

Key Skills & Experience Required

Work Knowledge:

  • Significant experience (minimum 10 years with at least 5 years on an open pit mine).
  • Experience in large multi pit operations utilising large scale mining equipment i.e. drill rigs and blasting experience essential.
  • Demonstrated experience in of Metal Accounting principles and geometallurgical processes.
  • Able to clearly demonstrate the aptitude to drive a light vehicle and hold a current Malian drivers’ licence or be able to obtain one.
  • Be physically fit and be able to pass a pre-employment medical examination.
  • Must have excellent written and oral communication skills in English and show a commitment to understand local culture and impart your mining operations and technical knowledge to the local Malian mine operations personnel.
  • Competent in incident/accident investigation.
  • Commitment to training of Malian national citizens.

Computer Skills:

  • Good computer skills with the ability to use integrated management systems, word processing, presentation and spreadsheet applications.

Communication Skills:

  • Ability to communicate effectively across all levels
  • Confident communicator with senior management, legal entities and external stakeholders
  • Strong report writing and presentation skills.
  • Able to read and write English at an Upper Secondary School standard.
