Regional Emergency Food Security & Livelihood (EFSL) Adviser
Bamako, Mali with extensive travel in the West Africa region
Attractive package to be negotiated with successful and high caliber candidate (accompanied, open-ended contract)
There are many solutions to food crises. So it’s vital that our help is based on a good understanding of the causes of each situation.  You’ll make sure we’re well prepared to help vulnerable people throughout countries in West Africa by leading our Emergency Food Security & Livelihoods work across the region.
About the role
Developing and spearheading our Emergency Food Security & Livelihood strategy in the West Africa region, you’ll assess and build the EFSL capacity of Oxfam and our partner staff, while co-ordinating the relevant aspects of emergency programmes such as leading EFSL assessments of emergency situations, reporting with recommendations and proposals for Oxfam’s response, including recommendations on longer-term humanitarian actions integrating Disaster Risk Reduction. Indeed, your know-how and advice will help develop far-sighted contingency plans for each country. It’s work that calls for a great deal of analysis and problem-solving – often with limited information – plus the remote management of staff in specialist disciplines. You can also expect to get involved in capacity-building activities like coaching, mentoring and on-the-job training. At the same time, you’ll carry out research to build our knowledge of the issues and work with colleagues on the ground to deliver cohesive, community-focused programmes. And throughout you’ll collaborate and network at both a regional and global level as you share ideas and influence approaches.
About you
Your wide-ranging EFSL field experience, preferably with non-governmental organisations, will encompass a number of different countries and have given you a thorough understanding of relevant humanitarian and policy issues. As a result, you’ll have a good practical understanding of everything from food security assessment and surveillance to market analysis, cash transfer programming and livelihood support. And you’ll have honed your analytical, needs assessment, capacity planning and report-writing skills to the full. Add a relevant post-graduate qualification plus fluent English and French, and you could soon be making a difference at a regional level.
About Oxfam
A simple, inescapable truth underlines everything we do at Oxfam. There’s enough wealth in this world to go around. It’s not unfortunate that people live in poverty. It’s unjustifiable. It’s not their problem. It’s ours too. And with the right support, we can beat poverty and injustice. Thousands of people already commit their time and talents to our campaigning, humanitarian and long-term development projects. Now we’re looking for yours.
