ICRISAT is seeking for a Scientific Officer to support the Pathology Program for West and Central Africa based in Bamako, Mali. The Scientific officer will work to improve the efficiency of the pathology work related to Legumes (Groundnuts) and Cereals (Sorghum and Pearl Millet).
Under the overall supervision of the Pathologist, the Duties and responsibilities of the Scientific Officer will be to
– Coordinate the implementation of pathology trials with collaborators and partners, including on-farm and on-station activities focused on groundnut and cereals pathology in selected countries in the region. This will include communication with partners, responding to partner requests, ensuring seed availability for trials, among others;
– Take responsibility for data collection, undertaking preliminary analysis, tabulation of results and preparation of reports for the Pathology Program to various end-users, including to development partners;
– Maintain field books and manage data retrieval and storage related to trials being conducted in the region;
– Oversee /supervise field staff involved in pathology activities;
– Assist in training of staff of collaborating and partner organisations as well as farmers based on their needs and requirements;
– Assist with development and improvement of training materials based on the needs of partners and clients;
– Assist in preparation of research proposals in support of pathology work;
– Attend meetings on behalf of the institute both within and outside the country
– Undertake any other duties as may be assigned by the Pathologist
Qualifications and Experience
– A Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture, which should include pathology, plant breeding, genetics and statistics. A Master’s degree (MSc) will be an added advantage;
– Experience with on-station and on-farm pathology and breeding operations, data analysis and computing is essential
– Experience with the utilization of participatory research tools and other enquiry instruments
– Willingness and ability to spend several days and long hours with farmers and scientists while collecting data
– Strong research, written and verbal communication skills;
