Duties

Serves as the official simultaneous/consecutive interpreter in three languages (English, French and Bambara) for the Regional Security Office (RSO), Anti-Terrorism Assistance Program (ATA) and Special Program for Embassy Augmentation and Response (SPEAR), high-level visiting U.S. officials, delegations, and other Embassy sections and agencies as assigned. Coordinates interpreting logistics with Embassy sections and contacts for RSO’s SPEAR ATA field visits and leads major interpreting assignments. Provides cultural advice to RSO SPEAR on communication with Malian counterparts and reviews written materials for the appropriateness of the cultural content before dissemination. The incumbent backstops the embassy translator.

Qualifications and Evaluations

Requirements:
EXPERIENCE:  Three years of demonstrated consecutive and simultaneous interpreting as well as translation in a government, business, or academic setting, including at least one year of experience in conference interpreting.

JOB KNOWLEDGE:  A broad knowledge of a wide range of specialized technical contexts (e.g. economic, political, legal, military, etc.) to participate in any conversation, meeting, or conference with fluency and precision is required. A good understanding of Mali’s major political and business issues as well as recent developments in American African relations.

Education Requirements:
A Bachelor’s degree in Translation/Interpreting Studies, Languages/Linguistics, Political Science, or Business is required.

LANGUAGE:

Fluent in English is required – Able to use the language fluently and accurately, making only minor errors of pronunciation and grammar.  Able to conduct all work in English.  Almost as proficient in English as in your native language.

Fluent in French is required – Able to use the language fluently and accurately, making only minor errors of pronunciation and grammar.  Able to conduct all work in French.  Almost as proficient in French as in your native language.

Fluent in Bambara is required – Able to use the language fluently and accurately, making only minor errors of pronunciation and grammar.  Able to conduct all work in Bambara.  Almost as proficient in Bambara as in your native language.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Must possess technical skills required for successful completion of tasks, such as simultaneous, consecutive, and whispered interpreting as well as fully understand and be able to apply translation techniques correctly and quickly while translating. Ability to write in English, Bambara, and French with nearly the accuracy of a well-educated native speaker. Ability to make public speeches and stay calm under pressure while interpreting is required. Microsoft Suite proficiency required.
