The British Embassy in Bamako is part of a worldwide network representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas. Supporting the Malian people through development, stabilisation and humanitarian policy and programming is at the centre of the UK’s mission in Mali.

The British Embassy Bamako is looking for a dynamic candidate to fill a position as a Post Security Manager (PSM) in the security section. The security team  looks after the key operational elements involved in ensuring the safety of the personnel, buildings and infrastructure.

This is an exciting and rewarding opportunity to work at the heart of the UK’s operations in Mali. The ideal candidate should demonstrate strong leadership skills, the ability to communicate effectively and a deep understanding of security threats and risks in Bamako and in Mali. They should also demonstrate strong analytical and problem solving skills, as well as the ability to work well under pressure.  Additionally, key integrity, professionalism, discretion and reliability attributes should be prevalent.  You can also expect to work closely with the wider Embassy team, security personnel in other international and diplomatic organisations.

Roles and responsibilities:

The Post Security Manager plays a critical role in ensuring the safety and security of the Embassy’s personnel, assets and facilities.  You will require a broad understanding of the security situation across Mali and the ability to gather relevant, reliable information. You will operate under the management of the Regional overseas security manager and your main duties will include:

– Responsibility for the management of the guard force employed at the Embassy

– Continuity in maintaining our established network of contacts within the Malian security authorities and country-based Security Managers /Advisors at other international and diplomatic organisations.

– Responsibility for the implementation and monitoring of Embassy Security Standard Operating Procedures

– Support to Embassy Contingency and Crisis planning.

– Overseeing the operation of access control, surveillance and alarm systems at the Embassy

– Being a point of liaison for the Embassy’s staff on all security related matters, provide advice and guidance on the FCDO’s security regulations.

– Monitoring, analysis and reporting on potential security threats and trends. This includes the completion of various risk assessments and input in the coordination and implementation of emergency response plans

– Day to day management of the guard force employed at the embassy. This includes coordination with the supplier in place at the time, performance monitoring, reporting on SLAs and KPIs, conducting reviews (Spot checks), developing and delivering training to personnel

– Monitor the operation of the Embassy’s radio systems and organise regular radio checks.

– Investigating and documenting security related incidents and breaches. You will also be responsible for designing action plans, in conformity with the FCDO’s security standards.

– Monitor the quality and the maintenance of the Embassy’s security equipment and installations. This includes accurately forecasting future requirements in collaboration with the Regional overseas security manager and requesting replacements or repairs as required.

– Delivering security induction briefings and other ad hoc training exercises for Embassy staff and visitors

– Assist with clearance processes as required and regularly brief staff on security requirements, standards.

– French/Bambara interpretation for the security section at the embassy. Translation of French/Bambara documents/notices into English, or vice versa, for the security section and wider embassy as required.

– In times of peak operational demand, work flexibly within the overall Embassy team

Essential qualifications, skills and experience: 

– Good leadership and personnel management skills
– Knowledge of general security principles, practices and standards
– Strong oral and written communication skills in English and French, along with excellent interpretation and translation skills.
– Strong communications skills in Bambara
– Proficient in Microsoft word, excel and outlook
– Good prioritisation and organising skills and an eye for detail.
– Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to deliver at pace while juggling simultaneous multiple priorities.
– Strong analytical skills – an ability to think independently, critically analyse information and draw out conclusions.
– Good team player with a proven track record in building a strong network of contacts
– A minimum of three years of work experience in the management of security for an appropriate organisation.
– Excellent references

Desirable qualifications, skills and experience:

– Previous experience of working for an Embassy or other international organisation
– Proven experience in risk assessment and security reporting

Language: English, French and Bambara

Level of language required:   Fluency in written and oral skills for English and French. Good oral skills in Bambara.

Learning and development opportunities (and any specific training courses to be completed): There is a wealth of Learning and Development (L&D) opportunities available to help staff pursue their professional development.  The successful applicant will be required to undertake a number of mandatory trainings and will have access to a range of L&D opportunities both in-house and overseas.

Working patterns:

Working hours are from 08:00 – 16:30 Monday to Thursday and 08:00 – 12:30 on Fridays (35.5 Hours)

Arrangement is possible for flexible working hours in agreement with the Line Manager.

This position may require the occupant to work longer hours for which time of in lieu will normally be taken.
