World Education, a U.S. non-governmental organization based in Boston dedicated to improving lives through economic and social development programs, seeks to fill the position of Teacher Training Specialist for its Mali office. World Education Mali is funded by the United States Agency for International Development for the implementation of the remaining two years of a five-year program dedicated to improving the quality and equity of basic education for boys and girls in Mali.
The Teacher Training Specialist will be responsible for providing:
– Technical support to the teacher training division within the Ministry of Education.
– Institutional support to the Division of Normal Teaching (DEN) through a working group represented by the Ministry of Education, World Education and other NGOs, in collaboration on community of learning activities. In addition, institutional support will be provided to support the implementation of the National Teacher Training Policy involving Teacher Training Institutes in the Community of Learning process.
– Capacity building with various Ministry of Education departments (DEN and the National Office for Basic Education (DNEB)). This will be carried out through planning, supervision, monitoring and evaluation of activities.
– Training the DEN and DNEB personnel in pedagogy, didactic discipline and teaching methodologies.
– Technical support to decentralized Ministry of Education services (Teaching Academies, Centers for Pedagogy Training and Teacher Training Institutes).
– Teacher Training activities relating to pre-service training activities of Medersa and community schools.
– Teacher Training activities for in-service teachers.
– Continuous monitoring of the implementation of the primary school curriculum on levels I- Grades 1 and 2, II- Grade 3, and III- Grade 4.
Qualifications:
– A minimum of five years experience working in teacher training and curriculum development.
– Prior experience working with Communities of Learning or School Clusters.
– Knowledge of USAID rules and regulations, as well as reporting requirements.
– Fluency in French and English, proficiency in Bambara a plus.
– Working knowledge of African education systems with particular focus on West Africa.
– Masters degree in the field of education or other related areas.
– Strong computer skills, including MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access.
– Strong written and oral communication skills.
– Ability to work well both as a member of a team and independently.
– Ability to balance multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
– Strong organizational skills.
– Experience working with diverse groups.
This is a full time position based in Bamako, Mali, with local travel to provide field monitoring and technical assistance.
Start date: Immediately
End date: July 2007 (with a possible 1 year extension).
